Colts’ Rodino, Raiders’ Coccio golden

The Schuylkill Track and Field Championships wrapped up on Wednesday at Tamaqua High School.

Day 2 of competition produced some surprises, but in the end the favorites delivered in most events.

Highlighting the day for area athletes were gold medal performances from Marian’s Jesse Rodino and Tamaqua’s Sarah Coccio.

Rodino was draped in gold after winning the discus with a toss of 145-2. Rodino was by far the best in his event, besting Pottsville’s Ryan Galen 130-9, Schuylkill Haven’s Ethan Kline (127) and Lehighton’s Bodie Hawk (124-1).

Jesse joined his brother James - a winner in the shot put on Tuesday - in representing the Colts on the top of the medal podium during the event. Meanwhile, after not participating in track her freshman and sophomore years, Tamaqua’s Coccio set a goal of leaping five feet in the high jump when she came out for the team as a junior.

Now a senior, Coccio did just that to win the goal medal in the event.

“I am just so, so happy. It was the height I wanted to hit, and I did it,” she said. “I decided not to participate in track after doing it in junior high, but I decided to come back last year and I’m so glad I did it.”

Finishing right behind Coccio in the high jump was teammate Amelia McArdle who had a jump of 4-10.

Girls medalist

While Rodino and Coccio went home with the only area gold medals on Wednesday, there were plenty of close calls that resulted in silver and bronze medals for local athletes.

Pottsville’s Alexa Guiffre slid past Tamaqua’s Katelynn Fredericks in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. Guiffre posted a time of 16.55, just getting under the wire ahead of Fredericks, who hit the tape at 17:01. Lehighton’s Ava Kistner (17:26) placed third.

Marian’s Alizabeth Pikitus finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.57. Nativity’s Sara Spolski captured the event in 59.61.

Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks finished second in the shot put with a school-record heave of 36-10. Banks was just one inch behind the winning throw of 36-11 by Blue Mountain’s Rosalind Gergely. Lorah Thomas (35-0) of Lehighton was third.

“I was definitely excited,” Banks said. “I was looking for a PR today, but to get the school record is even better.”

Minersville’s Maggie Hoffman-Long was the triple jump champion (34-2). She finished just ahead of second-place finisher Leah Wasko of Jim Thorpe (34-0). Third place went to Tamaqua’s Sarah Hope (33-9).

A pair of Times News relay girls teams earned medals. Tamaqua grabbed second place in the 400 relay with a time of 50.95, getting edged by Pine Grove, which hit the tape in 50.32. Marian finished in third place at 51.88.

Boys medalists

A pair of Marian runners turned in silver medal performances.

Alex Porambo took second in the 800 with a time of 1:58.82 - less than a second behind winner Ayden Kurtek of Minersville. In the 1600, the Colts’ Ablin Petschauer was edged by Minersville’s Keegan Duba.

In the triple jump, Chase Guers of Blue Mountain (44-6) just beat out Tamaqua’s Martin Griffin (42-11).

Stephen Kieffer of Tamqua was third in the 400 meters, and finished behind a pair of Nativity runners.

Thorpe’s Ehren Hassler placed third in the pole vault.

MISSING IN ACTION … Marian’s senior standout Carly Minchhoff - who recently signed a Letter of Intent to participate in track and field at Division 1 Monmouth - was injured and couldn’t compete in the javelin.

LOTS OF WORK … Tamaqua’s support team was outstanding in getting the event off without any hitches. It takes a horde of workers, and athletic director Mike Hromyak had his A-team helping him out. Dave Mace, Megan Frantz and Jim Hehn were among the stars in the group of 22 that did a great job during the two-day event.

TEAM SCORES ... Blue Mountain piled up 123.5 point to win the boys title. Marian’s fifth-place finish was the best among the six area teams. In the girls competition, Blue Mountain was the champ with 128 points. Tamaqua finished second with 86.5.
