The Lehigh Gap Nature Center has warned that dog treats embedded with fish hooks were discovered along the Appalachian Trail over the weekend.
“We notified the Pennsylvania Game Commission, since these treats were supposedly found along the Appalachian Trail within State Game Lands,” according to Chad Schwartz, the center’s executive director.
The hook-laden treats were spotted by a hiker between Route 873 and the George W. Outerbridge Shelter. The section of trail connects to the Lehigh Gap Nature Center trail system via the Woodpecker Trail, according to a post on the center’s Facebook page.
The center noted that all treats that were found have been removed.
“We don’t know how many were found, but we were told they were spread along the trail and likely not dropped accidentally by a fisherman,” Schwartz said.
Hikers with pets are advised to use caution when hiking the Appalachian Trail around the Lehigh Gap.
