Weatherly Police rescue ducklings

Several ducklings that fell through a storm drain in the area of the Hudsondale Street curve in Weatherly were rescued by borough police on Tuesday.

Officials said police were summoned to a traffic-related problem at the sharp curve where Officer Michael Eyer found the mother duck in the road in a frantic state pacing around the storm drain.

Police said Eyer was able to get the mother and two ducklings out of the street while traffic passed, leading them to the safety of a nearby stream. The officer had observed four ducklings fall through the grate of the storm drain, police said.

After notifying Police Chief Brian Markovchick and the chief’s arrival, the two policemen began preparations to remove the drain grate to enter the drain. They said when Eyer entered the drain, he observed the ducklings were no longer there.

Eyer then walked the stream bank to locate the pipe exit and entered the pipe as far as possible to ensure the ducklings were successfully reunited with the mother and were not injured.

In a press release, police said the department officers “go above and beyond to ensure the safety of all of the borough’s residents, including all animals, domesticated and wild,” adding the department “will not turn away an opportunity to help an animal in need.”
