Tamaqua student group holds prom promise

The Tamaqua Area Student Government Association will be sponsoring Prom Promise events this coming week ahead of the school’s prom, May 4.

On Monday, student government members will distribute red ribbons to vehicle in the senior and faculty parking lots.

Prom-going seniors on Tuesday will be encouraged to sign a key, pledging not to drink and drive during prom. Students who sign the key will be entered to win a gas card donated by a local business.

On Wednesday, Tamaqua police will host an assembly at 9 a.m. for all juniors and seniors stressing the dangers of drinking and driving. Faculty, staff and administrators will also read messages to students over the announcements throughout the day.

Seniors will simulate drunken driving on Thursday in their physical education classes by attempting to operate golf carts and other activities with special goggles.

Friday is Grim Reaper Day, when students will be selected from study hall to “die,” representing those students killed by drunken drivers and pledge not to talk the rest of the day.
