Lehighton Band to perform Spring concert
The Lehighton Band will present its annual Spring Concert Sunday a the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall, Sixth and Cypress streets in Lehighton.
The concert will be held at 2 p.m., and is free to the public. It will feature popular and easy listening pieces of music.
The concert will open with a concert arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner arranged by Jack Stamp. Three marches will be featured in the concert, all by different composers. The first march that opens the concert is March “Salutation” by Roland Seitz. It will be followed by a modern overture style song entitled “Novena” by James Swearingen.
The concert’s first Broadway style song of the afternoon will be “Highlights” from Jersey Boys. This selection includes “Walk Like a Man,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” December 1963, and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.” All songs are featured in the show which focuses on Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
The next number features the band’s saxophone section with the song, “Saxes Will Rock!” by Larry Neeck. This rock style song features Judy Schafer, Logan Impellizeri, Zane Himmelright and Maria Cuatta on Alto Sax; Brandon Cressley and Alex Galicia on Tenor Sax; and Troy Hest and Raina Clemens on Baritone Sax.
James Bond is one of the most famous movie series of all time. The band will perform “James Bond Suite” arranged by Frank Erickson. This suite includes “The James Bond Theme,” “Live and Let Die,” “For Your Eyes Only,” and “Goldfinger.”
Over the past year, the Lehighton Band has gained a number of students from Pleasant Valley School District who add so much to the band. A member of the band asked if the Lehighton Band would be interested in playing a song that was written by their high school band director, James DeVivo. The song, “A Celtic Vision,” quickly became a favorite of the band, and they are thrilled to be able to perform it at its concert.
“I Sing the Body Electric,” from the Broadway musical Fame will be the next song. It’s arranged by Jerry Nowak. It will be followed by “John Williams in Concert” arranged by Paul Lavender. It includes “The Mission Theme from NBC Nightly News,” “The Imperial March,” “Star Wars Theme” and “Cantina Band from Star Wars,” “Olympic Spirt,” “The Theme from Jaws” and “The Theme from E.T.”
“Spring Festival Overture” will be next. This piece is written by James Hosay. The band’s second march of the afternoon is “The Gladiator March” by John Philip Sousa. It will be followed by the theme from “The Mandalorian” arranged by Paul Murtha.
Karen Carpenter has one of the most identifiable voices in popular music. The band will perform “The Sounds of the Carpenters” arranged by Robert Lowden. It includes “Goodbye To Love,” “Top of the World” and “I Won’t Last a Day Without You.”
The Band occasionally receives music as a gift sometimes in honor or memory of someone. Bass Clarinetists, Linda Merlo donated the piece entitled “Jimmy Buffett - The Hits” to the band in memory of Jimmy Buffett who passed away September 2023. The medley contains “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Changes in Latitudes,” “Changes in Attitudes” and “Margaritaville.” It is arranged by Patrick Roszell.
The band will wrap up the concert with the march “Gallan Zouaves” by Karl King. The Lehighton Band is a nonprofit organization.
A free will offering will be accepted at the concert. The band will also be performing three concerts in the Lehighton Park in June, July and August. The band is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley.
