Lehighton wrestlers medal at national tournament
Five Lehighton wrestlers earned medals at the annual War of the Shore National tournament, held recently at the Wildwoods Convention Center in New Jersey.
Lucas Reed placed the highest, gaining a second in the 68-pound midget division.
Reed registered a 32-second pin to reach the round of 16 and followed that up with a fall in 1:30 to advance to the quarterfinals. Another early pin, this one in 52 seconds, moved him into the semifinals, where he suffered an 11-3 defeat to the eventual champion. Reed, however, battled back with two more falls in the consolations before posting a 9-5 win in the second-place bout.
The Lehighton/209 had a pair of wrestlers travel home with third-place finishes. Zeke Snyder, competing in the 60-pound tot bracket, registered a third while Richard Fronheiser - one of the group’s coaches - also garnered a third-place medal in the adult division at 197 pounds.
Snyder also reached the quarterfinal round of his bracket by posting a fall, pinning his opponent in 2:30. He then earned a hard-fought 8-5 decision to advance to the semifinals. After suffering a pin in the semis, Snyder came up with a 54-second fall in the consis to reach the third-place match. He secured third with another pin, this one in 2:51.
Fronheiser earned third the hard way, dropping his match in the round of 16 before reeling off four straight victories - including a 5-1 decision win in the third-place bout.
Valentino Schouppe managed a fifth place in the 51-pound tot division, while Cale Witt brought home a sixth in the 78-pound midget classification.
Schouppe reached the semifinals by gaining a 12-0 major decision in the round of 16 and a pin in 2:19 during the quarterfinals. After a loss in the semis, he rebounded in the fifth-place matchup with a 16-second fall.
Witt also posted two victories in the championship bracket, racking up a 14-2 major and an 8-4 decision to advance to the semifinals.
The team had five other wrestlers compete in the national competition. They were John Fisher, Connor Dugan, Aiden Dugan, Preston DiGrazio and Marc Macias.
