Pocono Urgent Care Centers has announced it is closing because of cyber attack on its billing provider Change Healthcare.
The centers are located at 101 Mountaineer Drive in Stroudsburg and 4545 Milford Road in East Stroudsburg.
A message on the urgent care website says, “On Feb. 21, 2024, ChangeHealthcare experienced a cyber attack by which shut down all functions of claim processing and continues to be offline. Because of this we have been unable to process claims for weeks and for unknown weeks to come.”
The urgent care said, “This attack has caused all healthcare systems using change healthcare to become financially vulnerable, but is especially damaging to smaller independent providers, such as us, who lack the resources to continue to operate without revenue. We have tried our best to keep our doors open to serve our community, as we have for the past 13 years, but as of now there is no resolution in sight. We have no alternative than to close our doors due to the irreparable harm this attack has caused.”
Change Healthcare is a Tennessee-based company, part of the health services provider Optum Inc. and owned by the massive conglomerate UnitedHealth Group. It first reported experiencing companywide connectivity problems in February.
“This is by far the biggest ever cybersecurity attack on the American healthcare system ever,” Dr. Céline Gounder, a CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, said Tuesday in a CBS news article. “This is a system, Change Healthcare, that processes medical payments and touches one out of every three patients in this country. So the magnitude of the scope of this attack is really quite large.”
Pocono Urgent Care concluded, “We thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve your medical needs for the past 13 years and will miss being a part of the community.”
