The Slatington Borough Police Department recently received a check for $3,065 from Abel Boyer, owner of Boyer’s Hardware and Guns in Slatington.
At last week’s borough council meeting, the borough’s police department received the check, which marked the fifth year for the Glock event fundraiser, “Back to Blue.”
A Glock gun was given to a lucky winner. Boyer started the event after the “defund the police” movement started, and said he wants local police to have the best equipment at all times.
Also at last week’s meeting, council approved new part-time police officer Kyle Bernhard at the rate of $25 an hour.
Bernhard has 12 years of experience in law enforcement.
In other business, council:
• Agreed to spend $38,995 on parts for the primary clarifier drive (a pump for solid waste).
• Approved the fire department’s request for the borough to contribute $17,268 of COVID-19 LFBF money toward payment on the truck.
• Agreed to spend $5,857 for a new heater for the maintenance building.
• Saluted borough fire Chief Robert Reph for a great job he’s done in a short time since taking that office. It was noted that one of his accomplishments was securing a grant for $13,000 for new air packs. Chief Reph urges volunteers to join the fire service. Drill nights are Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.
• The Northern Lehigh Halloween Parade on Oct. 26.
