Stroudsburg brothers charged in Jan. 6 riot
Two Stroudsburg brothers face felony and misdemeanor charges related to the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
Allegations against Andrew Valentin, 26, and Matthew Valentin, 31, include felony offenses of civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, as well as several misdemeanors such as entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct, and acts of physical violence within the Capitol premises.
According to court documents, the Valentin brothers were captured in open-source video footage, walking from the Washington Monument along Constitution Avenue toward the U.S. Capitol. The footage shows the brothers eventually making their way to the West Plaza of the Capitol grounds, where they climbed a media tower in the area.
The Valentin brothers, court documents state, were among a crowd that gathered on the West Plaza, rushing the police line. Body-worn camera footage revealed the brothers pushing a bike rack barricade into the police line. At one instance, a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office states, Matthew Valentin reached his hand through the barricade and grabbed a U.S. Capitol police officer.
Andrew Valentin, according to court documents, was seen taking out a cellphone to record the scene. Shortly after, both brothers approached the reformed police line, with Matthew holding a baton in one hand and a spray canister in the other. Matthew, according to the news release, then sprayed what appeared to be a chemical irritant into the line of officers, leading to law enforcement retreating from the West Plaza.
Subsequent events saw the brothers moving to the Upper West Terrace and engaging with another line of police officers. Matthew reportedly grabbed an officer’s baton during this encounter.
Law enforcement eventually cleared the area, prompting the brothers to return to the West Plaza. Andrew Valentin was captured on body-worn camera footage throwing a chair at a line of police officers, striking the shield of a Montgomery County officer.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting the case, with assistance provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Eastern and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania.
The FBI’s Philadelphia and Washington Field Offices are actively investigating the case, with Matthew Valentin being listed as “Be On The Lookout” #336 on its seeking information photos.
