Walnutport tackles parking problem
Walnutport may opt for no parking on a portion of a road after officials said it’s inundated with vehicles parked on the street.
Councilman Harold Greene told borough council at Thursday’s meeting that the matter needs to be addressed.
“Something’s got to be done,” Greene said.
Council President Michael Gaston said people don’t want to park their vehicles in their driveways.
“Some residents have too many cars,” Gaston said. “It’s not our problem.”
Gaston said there are 12 town houses in which there are “cars galore.”
“There are some cars that don’t even move, (there are) some families (there) that have four cars, five cars,” he said. “There is plenty of parking on Lincoln (Avenue), Williams (Avenue), tons of parking on Washington (Street).”
Gaston added there are instances where cars don’t move from Birch Street for days, weeks, sometimes even months at a time.
However, Councilwoman Patrice Hunsicker said “You also can’t tell people they have to park (on) their driveways and not on the streets.”
Borough fire Chief Mike Wentz expressed his concern.
“If there’s a fire there, the fire company is not going to be responsible if we cannot get our ladder truck up,” Wentz said. “We tried, we cannot do it; my only concern is that.”
Gaston suggested council make it no parking on the north side of Birch Street, and noted that the other side of the street has a lot more parking.
Borough police Chief Pete Wayda suggested having Mayor Wayne Weidner make it no parking for 90 days and see how things go.
Wayda said the borough has a solid argument, as it can’t maintain it in the winter because it can’t get through, and the fire department can’t fight a fire if has to under the current set up.
It would make it that there would be no parking from Birch Street, between Lincoln Avenue and Williams Avenue.
Weidner said he would look to do so at some point, though the effective date is yet to be determined.
