Heavy snow continues to fall around with the region Tuesday morning with readers in many areas reporting totals of a foot or more on the ground by 8 a.m.
The weather has also resulted in widespread power outages. According to the PPL Electric Utilities outage map, around 300 customers are without power in the Jim Thorpe area around 9:15 a.m., while disruptions are impacting around 250 residents in the Bowmanstown/Parryville areas.
South Tamaqua has heavy power outages reported, with 1,400 customers waiting for service to be restored. The outages also spread into Monroe, Lehigh and Northampton counties, where around 60 customers each in Kunkletown and Walnutport are without power.
Times News readers have been reporting snow totals on social media throughout the morning. Justin Startzel said 10-12 inches had fallen in Tamaqua by 8 a.m., while James Logue Jr. measured 11 inches in east Jim Thorpe.
Eleven inches had also fallen in Lehighton Borough by 8 a.m., according to Donna Bowman, while Nancy Greene Collins said areas just north of Palmerton had eclipsed a foot.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will taper off starting in the west and working east early Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to rise to near 40 degrees after the system makes its way out of the region. Tuesday night is expected to have lows in the mid 20s, allowing for possible for refreezing on area roads.
