Chestnuthill Twp. supervisors honor local Girl Scouts

Chestnuthill Township supervisors honored a local Girl Scout troop with a resolution during their meeting Tuesday night.

The proclamation was read to those in attendance and then adopted by supervisors Chuck Gould and Roger Kutzler. Supervisor Eric Snyder was absent.

“The girls were Cadettes last year when we built a mobile mini-food pantry, which is located at Chestnuthill Park. We stocked it with nonperishable food items,” said Ana Piel, leader of Troop 50812.

The food pantry earned the troop their Silver Award, one of the highest awards in Girl Scouts. It starts with finding an issue in the community that they care about, and then developing a project that can have a lasting impact.

The girls choose food insecurity.

“It is amazing to see how much you all in Girl Scouts do. It really sets a standard for others to follow,” Gould said.

The troop used hardware and roof metal that had been donated. Bulldog Liquidators gave them wooden pallets to repurpose. They used proceeds from Girl Scout cookie sales to buy discounted paint from Lowe’s.

Piel’s daughter, Zoe, said she enjoyed working on the pantry because “I got to learn how to build something.”

She and other troop members attend cyber school, and do not have technical class like those who attend a brick-and-mortar school.

The mini pantry, which is next to a take-a-book-leave-a-book mini library, was installed a few months ago.

“It was up in time for Thanksgiving in case anyone needed food,” said Piel.

The concept is similar to the library - someone in need can take a food item, and someone with extra can leave something.

The troop earned their Bronze Award during the COVID shutdown.

“They created a map of where to find food pantries and food-related resources. After that, they wanted to build an actual food pantry,” said Piel.

In other business, the township has requested that the Pennsylvania Department of Transporation temporarily reduce the speed limit by 10 mph on White Church Road and Camp Akiba Road and to post reduced speed limit signs on these two roads. The roads have a higher volume of traffic while the bridge on 715 is being replaced. The roads are part of the detour.

Residents, including a few farmers with large equipment, have seen speeding vehicles and crashes almost occur.
