Lehighton has extended the contract for its borough manager through the end of 2025.
After about a one-hour and 10-minute executive session, borough council on a 4-3 vote Monday approved the following for borough Manager Dane DeWire:
• Extended his contract by 23 months to the end of 2025.
• Agreed to have DeWire swap the borough vehicle he was permitted to take to and from his home for a 4% raise in 2024, and a 3% raise Jan. 1, 2025 for the remainder of the contract.
Council members Ryan Saunders, Rebecca Worthy, Steven Hawk and David Zimmerman were in favor. Council members Autumn Abelovsky, John Kreitz and council President Grant Hunsicker were opposed.
DeWire was hired in August on a 4-3 vote by the then-council on a one-year contract at a salary of $95,000.
Council now has three newly-seated council members who won seats in November’s General Election.
DeWire began his new position on Sept. 5.
In June, the-then council on a 5-1 vote after an executive session fired then borough Manager Steve Travers, who was hired on a 5-0 vote in August 2022 on a one-year contract at a salary of $105,000.
The borough gave no reason for Travers’ firing. Afterward, day-to-day matters had been handled in the borough office.
In June 2022, council unanimously approved hiring former borough Manager Nicole Beckett through Aug. 21, at the rate of $1,200 per month.
In May 2022, council hired borough assistant treasurer/secretary Kim Rubin as interim borough manager until a permanent borough manager was chosen.
Rubin began as interim manager on May 23 at a rate of $40 an hour.
