Kachurak submits resignation to Weatherly SD

The Weatherly Area School Board, just off its meeting completing the set of board members, received news at their regular meeting that business manager Robert Kachurak submitted his resignation. He will continue to work for the District until March 1.

Kachurak is taking on the business manager position at the Wyoming Valley West School District, which is less than 15 minutes from his home. The vote was unanimous with well-wishes and a heartfelt thank you offered.

Superintendent Daniel Malloy said, “It has been a great pleasure working with Rob.”

Kachurak said, “It was a hard decision. I was very impressed with the schools, and the town.”

His daily drive to Weatherly was about 45 minutes each way. In addition to cutting his commute, Kachurak will also receive a raise.

Malloy told the board that the newly opened position was posted on PennLink. A group of applicants is expected.

Kachurak closed by saying that he will be available to the district to resolve challenges even as he settles into WVWSD.

Video of the school board meetings will begin with the February meetings. Recordings will then be posted until the beginning of the following meeting.

Personnel recommendations were unanimously approved, including accepting Alexis Colecio as a substitute teacher through June, and bringing on Abigail Hernandez as a substitute cleaning aide.

The second readings of policies about Acceptable Use of internet, Computers and Network Resources, as well as Suicide Awareness, Prevention and Response, were approved.

Approval of the annual budget for the Carbon County Vo-Tech was tabled for more review.

Snow day makeup days will be Feb. 16, March 28, and June 3. Two more regular snow days remain.

This meeting was held on the 24th, because it was moved a week due to bad weather on the 17th. Discussion of the use of flex teaching days followed. Flex days are when teachers teach online.

With the snow days so far, the current anticipation for graduation is June 7.

Praise was offered to the district’s maintenance crew for their work in clearing snow.

In other business, William Knepper, a Pennsylvania School Boards Association representative, pointed out that Feb. 3 is the due date for school safety grants. A School Safety Summit by the PSBA will be held on March 19.

CCTI applications for students are due March 1. A tour of CCTI for eighth graders is slated for Feb. 12.

The next caucus meeting for WASB will be on Feb. 7 and regular meeting at 6 p.m. on Feb. 14.
