Op-ed: Rep. Susan Wild insults Carbon residents
By Dan Meuser
U.S. House of Representatives
(U.S. Rep.) Susan Wild’s insulting comments directed toward Carbon County residents were out of line and unbecoming of an elected official whose job it is to represent all constituents regardless of who they might cast a vote for in a presidential election.
Carbon County is one of the most beautiful areas in Northeast Pennsylvania, and its people are the salt of the earth. When I represented the county, I spent a great deal of time there meeting hardworking residents, visiting small businesses like the Boatyard, Blue Mountain Machine, and Sharps Compliance, as well as attending multiple events at the Harry Packer Mansion, the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad, and enjoying recreational activities at Blue Mountain Resort, rafting on the Lehigh River, and attending various events at Penn’s Peak.
My district team and I were deeply committed to serving the area’s residents. In fact, we had a full-time congressional office on Bridge Street in Weissport that we shared with state Rep. Doyle Heffley. Further, my former Deputy District Director Tom Gerhard, who was based in Weissport, served eight years as a Carbon County commissioner just prior to joining my office. Tom knew every inch of the county, and he was always willing to meet with any person, business, or elected official. He served in my office for three and a half years before retiring this past June.
My office responded to more than 13,000 constituent inquiries from Carbon County, successfully handled 643 casework requests, returned over $300,000 to constituents from federal agencies, secured more than a million dollars in federal grants for fire departments in the county, as well as an additional $130,000 in other grants for law enforcement, rural broadband coverage, and historical renovations, and secured $2.5 million in funding to renovate Jim Thorpe Borough Memorial Hall.
I was happy to do all this and more for the good people of Carbon County, and it likely contributed to my winning the county with more than 67 percent of the vote the last time I ran there.
As for “San Fran” Susan, last Congress she voted with Nancy Pelosi 100 percent of the time. Maybe she forgets she represents rural Pennsylvania and not San Francisco. Her record and rhetoric suggest she is further to the left than Nancy Pelosi, which perhaps would make her very popular in San Francisco, but not here. She is out of touch with voters in our region.
She votes against American energy 100 percent of the time. San Fran Susan votes against border security and never saw a spending bill she didn’t like, i.e., she’s voted for all of Biden’s $6 trillion in overspending. San Fran Susan has also voted to raise taxes and wants to do away with the Trump small business and middle-class tax relief reductions.
Specifically, she has voted against the Lower Energy Costs Act, the Secure the Border Act, the Parents Bill of Rights Act, the Disapproving of DC’s Revised Criminal Code Act, and even against a resolution denouncing Socialism.
Instead, she has supported extreme left legislation that has added trillions to our national debt and caused inflation to skyrocket.
She is wrong for Carbon County, and if you’re wrong for Carbon County, you’re wrong for Pennsylvania and for America.
And just like Hillary’s past “deplorable” comments, San Fran Susan’s comments are insulting, divisive, and destructive.
While she may attempt to attack my record, that didn’t stop her from highlighting my legislation to support rural teaching hospitals in her “First 100 Days Update” last year.
From securing millions in community funding projects and grants, to successfully resolving casework issues and providing top-notch constituent services, my team and I faithfully and successfully served Carbon County each and every day, as we do all counties we represent.
For the good of Carbon County, for the good of Pennsylvania, and for the good of the United States, I urge all communities within the 7th Congressional District to vote San Fran Susan out and elect a pro-economic growth, pro-national security, pro-constitution candidate as their next representative in the U.S. House.
Dan Meuser represents the 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before redistricting, he represented Carbon County, which is now in the 7th District, which is represented by Susan Wild.
