Cookie season begins for Girl Scouts

It’s Girl Scout cookie time!

Scouts from around the region are taking pre-orders for the baked goodies, while others are already hitting stores and going door-to-door to make sales.

They have signature favorites like Thin Mints and shortbread Trefoils, and newer treats like Lemonades and gluten-free Caramel Chocolate Chip.

“I’ve tried them all. It’s the Girl Scout rule!” said Charlotte Harvey, 6, a member of Tamaqua Girl Scout Troop 33013, which is taking online orders in advance of in-person sales.

The troop’s leader, Meranda Hess, said cookie sales are Scouts’ biggest fundraiser.

“In addition to funding our troop for the upcoming year with supplies and badges, girls also earn money for travel,” she said.

The sales allowed the girls in first to eighth grade to travel to Niagara Falls last year, and will go toward a visit to Boston this summer.

“Cookies make it possible for girls who might not be able to experience travel otherwise,” Hess said.

The Tamaqua troop is now making note of those who place pre-orders online. The cookies can be shipped for a fee, or delivered by a Troop members when they receive them in early March, Hess said.

And Scouts in the Lehighton area are already setting up outside stores like Walmart, Giant and Lowe’s.

The Tamaqua troop is part of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, which includes troops in Schuylkill County, Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley, and Weatherly. They are all taking pre-orders now - and will begin their in-person sales in March. They’ll also set up shop outside stores like Walmart in Hometown and Boyer’s in Tamaqua in March.

Troops in Lehighton, Palmerton, Kresgeville, along with other parts of Northampton and Carbon counties, fall under the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. They’ve already begun their in-person sales and continue to sell online.

“Some girls do door-to-door sales. Our top seller actually does a lot of door-to-door sales in our neighborhood,” Hess said of the Tamaqua troop.

Lilyanne Hess, 13, who is Hess’s daughter, sold 1,200 boxes last year.

“I sell a lot of cookies because I ask everyone, literally everyone. I also sell cookies at cookie booths and I go door-to-door in my neighborhood,” she said.

Not only that, Lilyanne began collecting data on the varieties of cookies that people buy on certain streets near her.

“This will help me to be better prepared this year because I have an idea of what kinds of cookies my neighbors might want to buy,” she said.

Jessica Mislinski, director of product program and retail for Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, said girls like Lilyanne learn from the sales events.

“When you buy a box of cookies, you’re doing much more than purchasing a treat. You’re supporting a Girl Scout as she learns about running a business, hones leadership skills, and challenges herself to get outside her comfort zone,” Mislinski said.

Business talk aside, the Scouts admit that the cookies are delicious.

“My favorite cookie is the peanut butter patties. Me and daddy share them before bed at night or after dinner. They’re the best,” said Daniella Hernandez, 7.

Piper Harding, 13, is a fan of Thin Mints.

“I like that you get a lot in a box and they are delicious,” she said.

Charlotte Paul, 9, likes Adventurefuls.

“It has a perfect blend of caramel and chocolate and a little bit of a crunch. It is just so good,” she said.

Adalyn Hontz, 13, has a simple reason for why she enjoys peanut butter patties most.

“They’re better than the other ones,” she said.

Ivy Carl, 8, said she’s tried every flavor of Girl Scout Cookies.

Hernandez hasn’t, but she plans to.

“I’m scared to try new things but the cookies with the chocolate chips look yummy so I will give it a try,” she said of the Gluten Free Caramel Chocolate Chip cookies.
