Nesquehoning fills vacant council seat

Nesquehoning Borough Council now has a full board.

During the monthly meeting on Wednesday, council voted in a 4-3 vote, with Mayor Tom Kattner casting the tie-breaking vote, to appoint Lisa Shubeck to fill the two-year council seat. Council members Mary Fox, Lois Kuba and Mark Nalesnik voted against the appointment, while council members Suzanne Smith, David Hawk and Paul Kattner voted in favor of the appointment.

The seat was won by Paul Kattner, who also won a four-year seat. He chose to vacate the two-year seat and be sworn in for the four-year term.

Shubeck, who wasn’t present at the meeting, was one of three residents who put in letters of interest to fill the vacancy.

In other appointment matters, council also chose to not reappoint the chairman of the water authority board.

In a 3-0 vote, council decided against Shawn Quigley continuing to serve on the authority. Fox, Kuba and Nalesnik voted against the reappointment, while Hawk, Smith and Kattner abstained due to Hawk and Kattner being on the water authority and Smith being employed by the water authority.

Council then voted 3-0 to appointment Robert Pilla to fill the authority vacancy with Fox, Kuba and Nalesnik voting in favor and Hawk, Smith and Kattner abstaining.

Pilla was present at the meeting, accepting the appointment.
