Two endowed scholarships started at Marian Catholic

The late Robert C. Marzen Sr. of Jim Thorpe and the late Lawrence J. Furey of Lansford never imagined in December 1964 when they were both elected vice presidents of the Men of Marian that two of their children would be playing a leadership role at Marian Catholic High School in 2024.

The two children, along with their siblings, have endowed scholarships in their memories with significant gifts.

Leo V. Marzen, Class of 1979, along with his siblings Bob ’65, Eileen, Kathleen, Joe ’71, and Marianne ’74, have established an endowed scholarship fund in memory of their parents, Robert C. and Connie Marzen for the benefit of students who live in the Jim Thorpe area who want to attend Marian. Connie Marzen was a 1944 graduate of Mauch Chunk Catholic High School.

Leo Marzen serves on the board of directors at Marian and chairs the Nominating and Governance Committee. He lives in Stamford, Connecticut. He is the founder and managing partner of Bridgewater Advisors Inc. in New York City, a private wealth management firm.

His classmate and fellow Marian board member, Larry Furey, formerly of Lansford, along with his siblings Mary Pat ’75, Ann ’78, Michael ’83 and Patrick ’83 have also established an endowed scholarship fund in memory of their dad, Lawrence J. Furey, Class of 1944 from Saint Ann’s High School and in honor of their mom, Ann B. Kilroy Furey, Class of 1949 from Saint Jerome’s High School, for the benefit of students who live in Lansford, Coaldale, Summit Hill, or Nesquehoning who want to attend Marian.

Larry Furey also serves on the board of directors of Marian and chairs the Advancement Committee. He lives in Naples, FL and is the founder and senior Partner of Partners in Mission, LLC and Partners in Mission School Leadership Search Solutions, LLC, the preeminent consulting firm and executive search firm, respectively, serving Catholic schools across the United States.
