Tamaqua OKs tearing down garage

Tamaqua Borough Council approved several certificates of appropriateness recommended by the Tamaqua Historical Architectural Review Commission for properties in the historic district.

Among them was an application from the American Hose Company, which plans to demolish a 1980s-era white brick garage at 37 Mauch Chunk St. The structure is attached to the fire house and houses an aerial fire truck.

The HARC believes the demolition will not harm the character of the neighborhood and agrees that a new addition planned by the fire company will be more complimentary to the area.

Also, the Alliance for Building Communities was granted permission to replace wooden steps at 401 Hazle St. with new metal steps.

Other certificates were approved for new windows at a 320-322 W. Broad St.; a sign for a store at 31 Center St., and signs for 116 E. Broad St.
