I had the misfortune to have attend the recent reorganization meeting of Lansford Borough Council. Misfortunate is due to the distressing matters which transpired that evening. Immediately following the results of the general election, lobbing was started by those already in office to gather votes for president of the board, etc. This revived up a pace as time got closer to January. Calls and calls were made, promises of committee assignments, intimidations, and on and on. This was not with the good of the community In mind. No. None of these maneuvers were to better the town. It was get even time. I’ll vote for you, if you get rid of the secretary. And, it worked. Several in the audience just shook their heads up and down indicating this was expected. Had been heard about. So, the secretary who had been employed by the borough for 7½ years, who had just done payroll, had compiled everything for the meeting and was sitting there taking minutes, was not re-appointed.
And there was no assistant secretary.
Motion was made for re-appointment, but was not seconded, so it died. Secretary questioned if that meant she was not re-appointed, Yes. She left the meeting,
Their actions while reprehensible in itself, leaves the borough unattended by anyone who has knowledge of municipal matters. The council certainly doesn’t. They could not even tell me what the borough’s millage is this year. Having payments put in the borough drop box as recommended by Mr. Markovich is disturbing as they are not bonded and should not be handling funds. In my many years on council and since, I never remember the office closed due to no staff. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Year 2024 will be more of the same. Sadly,
