Snow results in slippery commute

Snow continued to fall this morning as temperatures remain below freezing, creating slick travel conditions.

As of 9 a.m., an average of about 2 inches fell across the region, according to Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.

The conditions caused various school districts across the area to either close or operate on flexible instruction. LANTA canceled its Carbon routes Tuesday.

Residents across the area reported slow commutes on snow-covered roads. Some of the main roads were clear, but side roads were not ready for the early drivers.

By the time all was said and done, Kines said the total would probably average out to around 3 inches.

“Certainly one advantage to having snow when it’s cold is that it’s very powdery and light and easy to move about,” Kines said. “Those who have to shovel, it’s certainly not a back-breaker; it’s about as easy as it gets.”

Kines said the that by this afternoon, the snow was expected to be on its way out, with cold weather shaping up for the next several days.

Temperatures tonight could get down to close to 10 degrees, and coupled with the breeze blowing most of the time and the wind chill coming into play, he said it’s going to feel like it’s close to zero or below zero tonight.

Kines said on Wednesday it’s going to feel like it’s in single digits, with temperatures expected to max out in the early 20s.

“If you got to be outside, you got to bundle up,” he said.

Kines said the cold stays with us Thursday, as there’s going to be a cold system Thursday into Thursday night that could cause an inch of snow, and could cause some slippery roads, as the temperature will get up to close to 30.

He said a stronger system comes through on Friday, and with it, another round of snow, which could bring us a couple inches of snow like the one today.

“Any snow we get Thursday or Friday should be very easy to move around; a dry, fluffy snow,” he said.

Kines said that behind that Friday system comes another round of pretty cold air for the first half of the weekend, with temperatures on Saturday struggling to get above 20, with wind accompanying the cold to make it feel like it’s below zero.

“It looks like next week, the extreme cold eases up for a couple of days,” he said. “We might see some temperatures back up in the 30s at some point early next week, (which) may be accompanied by precipitation.”
