Community helps out Lausanne fire victims

The cause of an early morning fire that destroyed a two-story home in Lausanne Township, near Weatherly, Monday remains undetermined, a fire chief said.

Flames ripped through the home at 3907 Buck Mountain Road around 3:30 a.m., leaving a mother and son homeless. A state police fire marshal was on scene Monday, Lehigh and Lausanne Fire Chief Tim Rossman said.

Within hours, the Weatherly-area community began to rally around Amanda Neidlinger and her son, Nathaniel, who were taken to the hospital for treatment and evaluation following the blaze. Neidlinger was admitted.

In the community, Paula Mengle began collecting pre-paid Visa gift cards to help the mother and son start to rebuild their lives.

Gift cards can be dropped off at Mengle Coal and Oil’s office or mailed to the business at 253 Hudsondale St., in care of Paula Mengle.

People also began donating to a GoFundMe account set up by Neidlinger in November to help pay for medical treatments as she battles breast cancer.

Others sent donations through PayPal to her business, River Run Healing Arts Center, which Neidlinger operates from her home. A QR code was also made available on social media to link people to the PayPal site directly.

Also planned is an all-you-can-eat breakfast at the Flying Aces Motorcycle Club at 470 Rockport Road in Weatherly from 7 a.m. to noon on Jan. 28 to benefit the Neidlinger and her son. There will also be tricky trays and raffles.

Rossman believed other fundraisers were also in the planning stages.
