Prothonotary report

A total of 312 cases were started in November in the office of Carbon County Prothonotary Kayla M. Semmel, according to a monthly statistical report released by the officeholder.

A breakdown of the new cases is as follows: assessment appeals, 4; BOC judgments, 69; civil actions, 23; court appointment, 1; federal judgments, 4; license appeals, 2; magistrate’s judgments, 18; magisterial district judge appeals, 10; municipal judgments, 94; PAS judgments, 11; quiet title action, 1; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 14; stipulations/waivers of liens, 6; tax sale, 1; zoning appeal, 1; custody complaints, 10; divorce complaints, 10; miscellaneous cases, 4; name change petition, 1; paternity complaint, 1; protection from abuse petitions, 22; and mental health cases, 5.

The office staff processed 34 applications for U.S. Passports and rendered assistance to customers with 15 passport renewal applications. A total of 33 photos for passports were taken.

Semmel reported the following income was received in November: prothonotary’s fees, $20,415.39; custody/divorce fees, $1,870.65; data processing fees, $3,307.50; PFA surcharge, Sheriff, $25; PFA surcharge, Courts, $25; stenographer fees, $286; total, $25,929.54.

The prothonotary remitted $5,900 to the county in remote access fees; $3,381.99 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue, in fees collected on new cases; $995 to the Automation Fund in fees collected for the future automating of the office; and $28.05 to the state in sales taxes collected for passport photos.
