Man wanted in Allentown shooting turns himself in
A man wanted in the shooting deaths of an Allentown woman and her grandson has turned himself into authorities and is in Lehigh County prison.
District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan said Thursday afternoon that police were looking for Gabriel Cartagena, 43, who is charged in the killings that took place at 8:40 p.m. Dec. 29, 2023 at a home at 160 Chestnut St. in Allentown.
The victims are 44-year-old Ada Ortiz and her 1-year-old grandson, Sebastian Serrano Jr.
Cartagena is charged with two counts each of criminal homicide, attempted homicide and aggravated assault, all felonies of the first degree; one count each of burglary and person not to possess, use, manufacture, control or sell firearms; all felonies of the first degree; and firearms not to be carried without a license, a felony of the third degree.
Cartagena is not in custody and is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
Police were called to the Chestnut Street home for a report of a shooting. Both Ortiz and Serrano were found on the living room home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio ruled the manner of death for both victims as homicide.
In the kitchen of the home, police found a third victim, Leandro Ortiz, who had a gunshot wound to his upper left side chest. Leandro Ortiz, the husband of Ada Ortiz, told police the shooter was armed with a gun and took aim at a fourth victim only identified as R.S., a 7-year-old child.
Ortiz told police he was shot when he stepped between the shooter and R.S.
The investigation included multiple agencies including the Allentown Police Department; Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force; federal agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Marshal’s Service; Pennsylvania State Police and the community who worked to help provide information to aid law enforcement.
