Dog shelter receives $10,000 donation

A Nesquehoning woman is showing her support for the dogs under Tom Connors’ care at the county animal shelter.

On Tuesday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner announced that a donation of $10,000 was received from Melodie A. Jainnini to be used at the shelter.

“You and your staff are truly dedicated to dogs in our community,” Jainnini wrote in a letter with her donation. “This has been evident to all of us for the work that the shelter does along with your long hours. Your ‘take the bull by the horns’ dedication is much appreciated.”

Jainnini asked that the donation be used to construct or purchase a pre-fab room that can be used as a meet and greet room for the pups.

“This would be a great opportunity for the potential adopters to meet and spend time with their future pup in a more intimate way,” she said.

Ahner commended the people who make the shelter a safe place for dogs and for all the donors who help in various ways.

He also thanked Jainnini, who was not present at the meeting, for her donation.

The Carbon County Animal Shelter is at 63 Broad St., Nesquehoning, off Route 93 on the Broad Mountain. The dogs are under the care of a small staff, headed by Connors.

Over the last few years, the shelter has received some much needed upgrades, including a new office area for staff and entrance for visitors, an upgrade to the HVAC system and more.

The shelter has 16 kennels and the number of dogs under the county’s care fluctuates daily.

For more information on the shelter, or to adopt a dog, call the office at 570-325-4828 and set up a time to come in. The hours of operation are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
