New Carbon officials take oaths
Four newly elected Carbon County officials and seven incumbents who were re-elected in November began their duties on Tuesday after participating in a swearing-in ceremony.
Those receiving their oaths for the first time include Commissioner Michael J. Sofranko, Magisterial District Judge Beth A. Dodson, Coroner Mark Smith and Controller Kayla Herman.
Re-elected officials who received the oath are Commissioners Wayne E. Nothstein and Rocky C. Ahner, Magisterial District Judges William J. Kissner and Eric M. Schrantz, Prothonotary Kayla M. Semmel, Recorder of Deeds Donna L. Gentile and Sheriff Daniel G. Zeigler.
District Attorney Michael S. Greek was also re-elected but was sworn-in before Tuesday’s courthouse event.
The main courtroom was crowded with relatives and friends on those entering office.
The oaths were administered by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic and Judges Steven R. Serfass and Joseph J. Matika.
Each of the judges welcomed the officials and gave short talks about their committed roles.
“You have a lot to learn,” Judge Nanovic said to the newly elected officials. “It’s time not only to learn and to grow but improve yourself.”
He said, “You have a duty not only to the public but to yourselves.”
The three commissioners - Nothstein, Ahner and Sofranko - were given their oaths simultaneously. All were accompanied by their wives.
Standing next to Dodson were her parents, James and Liz. Her mother placed the magisterial robe on her after she recited the oath.
Employees of each row office as well as sheriff deputies also were administered their oaths.
Jack Soberick of Lansford was sworn in twice - as the county detective and a member of Lansford Borough Council.
