A West Penn Township business owner died after he was run over by a man driving a dump truck.
Mary T. Boyle, 35, who owned Mark T. Boyle Welding & Industrial Sandblasting, 725 Penn Dr., succumbed to his injuries hours after being struck on Aug. 2.
The driver, Michael Albert, 60, of Scranton, was charged with third degree murder, aggravated assault, homicide by vehicle, theft of services, and recklessly endangering another person. He is awaiting trial in the case.
According to West Penn police, officers arrived at the business to find Boyle lying on the ground and Albert in the driver’s seat of the dump truck.
Albert was a customer who arrived to pick up his truck but was told he couldn’t have it until he paid for the work done. Instead, he got into the driver’s seat and began driving it away.
Witnesses said they saw a tri-axle dump truck trying to leave the parking lot very fast, and saw the back end of the driver side of the dump truck raise up then lower down.
Boyle tried to get Albert to stop, but Albert swerved toward Boyle and ran over him. He continued to drive away as Boyle lie on the ground.
Boyle passed away at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.
More than 1,000 people turned out for his viewing and funeral from E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.
Hundreds joined in a procession of firetrucks, tri-axles, tow trucks, semi cabs and John Deere farm tractors to escort the hearse carrying Boyle’s body to Sky-View Memorial Park in Hometown.
The father of three was a staunch community supporter.
