PSP releases holiday roadway statistics
Pennsylvania State Police released the statistics relating to the Christmas holiday crash and enforcement activities of officers who were assigned detail for the period of Dec. 23-25.
Over the three-day period, police investigated 404 crashes statewide, with three deaths. Seventy others were injured and alcohol was a factor in 36 of the crashes.
Police said 198 people were arrested during that period throughout the state for driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.
Troopers also issued 1,036 speeding citations, 123 citations for failure to wear a seat belt and 22 citations for not securing children in safety seats.
By comparison, the crash data report shows the 404 crashes were considerably lower than the 661 that police investigated in 2022, although there were 5 fatal crashes in which 7 people were killed last year (compared to 3 this year). A year ago, 113 people were injured in highway incidents, compared to 70 this year. There were 36 alcohol-related crashes in both years, with last year having two alcohol-related crashes, compared to none this year.
In terms of enforcement data, the 198 DUI arrests were 82 more than were made last year. The speeding citations this year more than doubled, as the 1,036 tickets written dwarfed the 451 from a year ago. Police issued 22 child seat citations this year, double the 11 from 2022; 123 seat belt citations were given, 13 more than the 100 written a year ago; and officers wrote 2,853 other citations, 605 more than the 2,248 they issued in 2022.
