Man faces drugs, explosive device charges

An Albrightsville man faces several drug charges and a charge of possessing weapons of mass destruction after a traffic stop Tuesday in Carbon County, according to state police.

State Trooper Kody Nowicki of Fern Ridge pulled over Peter Ivanitch, 47, on Masters Trail after he recognized the car he was driving and knew that Ivanitch had a suspended driver’s license because of a previous driving under the influence charge, police said.

Nowicki told Ivanitch he knew his license was suspended and noticed that Ivanitch was agitated when he asked him for proof of insurance.

During field sobriety tests, Ivanitch displayed indicators of impairment that would render him incapable of safely operating a motor vehicle, according to police.

After Nowicki asked Ivanitch if he had any drugs on him, Ivanitch pulled out an Eagle cigarette pack, which had a folded paper inside containing a white substance. Ivanitch said that the white powder was a crushed up percocet, police said.

After Ivanitch gave consent to search his vehicle, Nowicki found a glass smoking device containing narcotics; six straws containing narcotics; a waxine bag containing fentanyl; two waxine bundles containing fentanyl; 11 plastic zip lock bags containing fentanyl; a blue plastic container containing fentanyl; a paper receipt containing fentanyl; a plastic bag containing a blue unknown narcotic; and a metal improvised explosive device.

Nowicki turned over the improvised explosive device to an explosives unit of the state police.

Ivanitch faces charges of weapons of mass destruction; risking catastrophe; make repairs/sell/etc. offensive weapons; DUI: controlled substance; intentional possession of controlled substance by person not registered; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; driver’s license suspended/revoked; and operating vehicle without required financial responsibility.

Ivanitch is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Jan. 17 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
