Man charged with assault of officer

A man faces with a bench warrant for his arrest faces charges after assaulting a law enforcement officer earlier this month.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Walnutport Police Chief Pete Wayda in the case against Ian Shoemaker:

On Dec. 6, Wayda was investigating a suspicious vehicle at the Truist Bank at 500 Main St. in Walnutport.

The vehicle in question was a maroon Saturn sedan occupied by Shoemaker, 40.

Upon Wayda’s arrival, Shoemaker pulled from the Truist Bank parking lot and headed south into the parking lot of Walnut Plaza.

Wayda observed the Saturn stop, and Shoemaker began to back up and pull forward in the parking lot near Snap Fitness. The vehicle would turn partially sideways, then either pull ahead or back up again, which went on for several minutes.

Upon initial contact with Shoemaker, Wayda requested his Pennsylvania Driver’s License and vehicle documents, but no response was received.

Shoemaker made sounds that were undistinguishable to Wayda, who observed Shoemaker profusely sweating and muttering something.

Wayda asked Shoemaker to step from the vehicle and Shoemaker reached for the gear shift lever as if to drive away.

Slatington Borough Police officer Anthony Ballerini reached into the vehicle from the passenger side and turned the ignition off, at which time Shoemaker grabbed him by the arm and refused to let go.

Wayda attempted to gain entry into the vehicle but the driver’s door was locked.

Shoemaker and Ballerini began to struggle inside the car, at which time Wayda also entered the car and struggled with Shoemaker until the driver’s door opened and they all fell to the ground.

Shoemaker struggled while police attempted to place him into custody.

Once Shoemaker was handcuffed, police conducted a pat down search, and found a purple/silver 9mm handgun inside a black beanie hat.

Shoemaker was escorted to Wayda’s patrol vehicle for transport to the police station.

While escorting Shoemaker to the patrol vehicle, Shoemaker head-butted Ballerini.

Shoemaker was transported to the Walnutport Police Station and eventually turned over to the Northampton County Sheriffs when it was discovered there was a bench warrant for his arrest.

Shoemaker faces charges on two counts each of assault of law enforcement officer and resisting arrest or other law enforcement, and one count each of firearms not to be carried without a license, receiving stolen property, carrying and exhibiting driver’s license on demand, and driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked.

Shoemaker is currently incarcerated in the Northampton County Prison in lieu of $150,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Dec. 19 before District Judge Robert A. Hawke of Walnutport.
