Windows shot in businesses, cars in Lehighton

As she approached her business Saturday morning, Christina Yurasits’ heart sank when she realized her pride and joy had been smashed to smithereens.

The windows at her Blended Bakery storefront at 158 S. First St. had been shot at, along with several other businesses and several vehicles parked along the street.

Lehighton police were called to the area of First Street around 7 a.m. Saturday.

It was determined that windows were shot out at the bakery, as well other businesses and parked vehicles along the street.

Yurasits posted Saturday night a thank you to people who responded, but said, “I’m not going to lie my heart is absolutely broken. When I turned the corner to walk into the bakery my heart broke. To see all that glass on the ground and our beautiful storefront just shattered brought tears to my eyes.”

“Our small business community rallied and came together for one another and the display of love was incredible. We checked in on one another and offered whatever support we could,” she said.

The bakery still hosted its birthday party Saturday and Cookies with Mrs. Claus.

Tina Henninger, owner, Wine & More on 1st, said her business was also struck.

“I only had one pellet hit my windows,” Henninger said. “Luckily, my security camera caught the car.

“It’s one of those things; we realize it’s just idiots being idiots,” she said. “We were very happy the way all the businesses came together.”

Henninger added, “The police were fabulous,”

“(Lehighton Borough Police Chief) Troy (Abelovsky) came in on his day off,” she said. “It was a bad situation that happened, but everyone did everything in their power to take care of it.”

Contacted Monday morning, Abelovsky confirmed there was damage done to local businesses on First Street.

“Through our investigation over the weekend, it looks to be a pellet gun,” Abelovsky said.

He said he knows who the suspect is and will be filing charges.

Abelovsky said, “It was a mutual effort between our department, the merchant videos we were able to look at over the weekend; it was in conjunction with Mahoning Township Police, in conjunction with Summit Hill Police,” he said. “By working together, we were able to determine the ID of the car, and we were able to get the defendant in who admitted to the crime.”

He said that Blended Bakery, Wine & More on 1st, and Ateira’s on First were damaged, and added there may be others that had damage in the area.

Abelovsky added that if there are other merchants that had damage to their properties in conjunction with a pellet gun, they can reach out to the Lehighton Borough Police Department at 610-377-4003.
