Toy drive benefits children’s hospital

Thanks to generous donations and community support it was another successful year for the Hunters Hope Toy Drive to benefit Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.

An abundance of gifts were delivered to the children on Wednesday, according to Kim Sargent, whose son Hunter Wolfe passed away in 2011.

Oncologist Dr. Gregory Halligan was on hand to help accept and distribute the gifts.

In 2010, 11-year-old Hunter was diagnosed with leukemia and spent Christmas at Saint Christopher’s. Hunter passed away in July 2011.

The first Christmas without Hunter, seniors at Jim Thorpe High School, Zach Confer and Danielle McArdle, started a toy drive in his memory as their senior project. This toy drive quickly spread throughout Jim Thorpe and beyond.

Sargent said, “Countless people are involved and it essentially runs itself.”

Toys were also dropped off at her home or sent from Amazon directly to the home.

There were also drop off locations at Jim Thorpe schools, St. Luke’s and areas set up around Chester County and Kutztown University.

Trailer loads of toys and thousands of dollars in gift cards were donated.

This year senior Leah Wasko helped with the toy drive as part of her senior project at Jim Thorpe High School.

Thanks were given to Pocono Whitewater Rafting, Kutztown University and the residents who helped make Hunters Hope Toy Drive successful.
