Monroe officials trying to find use for ‘old jail’

The Monroe County commissioners are seeking help to figure out what to do with the “Old Jail.”

At their Dec. 6 meeting, the commissioners approved a consulting services agreement with Gannett Fleming Inc. to perform a Historic Structure Report and Feasibility Study for Adaptive Reuse of the old jail.

“We received a grant from the state to perform a Historic Structure Report and Feasibility Study for the old jail subject to the solicitor’s changes,” said Commissioner John Moyer. “A study will look at the jail and see what has to be done to help conserve it and see what the best possible uses of the old jail could possibly be.”

The cost for the services is not to exceed $47,187.94.

In other business, the commissioners ratified a change order for the Courthouse Renovation Expansion Project. The change order adds $121,593.09 to the contract with Lobar Construction for miscellaneous additions.

The commissioners also authorized applying for a Local Share Account grant with the Department of Community and Economic Development in the amount of $99,093 for the Fire School.

“We are applying for $99,000 for the fire school for another prop to be used there,” Moyer said.

The commissioners also approved a 24-month extension to the Industrial Development Authority on its loan for engineering costs for the project on Interstate 80 and routes 715 and 611 project.

“This is a debt that the IDA has,” Moyer said. “We are backing for the Industrial Development Authority for engineering on the 288/289 Project on Interstate 80. We have to do a letter of credit.”

The extension is for the $4 million County Guaranty on the Guaranteed Limited Obligation Note.
