An officer shot and killed a person who lunged at police while they were investigating a burglary at a vacant Shenandoah home just after midnight Monday.
Pennsylvania State Police’s Troop L Major Case Team is investigating the incident that occurred at 309 W. Coal St. at 12:38 a.m.
According to state police, officers from the Shenandoah and Mahanoy City police departments were dispatched to the location for a burglary in progress.
Police spoke to the property owner who has video surveillance inside the unoccupied property. The owner told police he saw a person inside wearing a mask and carrying a “big” knife.
As officers were clearing the residence they found a person under an upstairs bed. As they moved the bed, the person lunged at an officer with the knife.
Police shot their service weapon and struck the person. Officers then rendered aid and summoned emergency medical responders. The person was pronounced dead by the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation is ongoing. The name of the person will be released pending notification of next of kin, police said.
