Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 9

The Tamaqua and Panther Valley boys and girls basketball teams picked up wins on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks turned in a stellar performance to earn gold at the Pennsylvania National Guard Invitational.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Panther Valley-Catasauqua

Panther Valley won its third straight game, pulling away from Catasauqua for a 71-40 non-league victory.

Chase Weaver scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half, while Drew Kokinda hit for 10 of his 13 in the opening two quarters as the Panthers built a 10-point halftime lead.

PV put the game away with a 23-point fourth quarter, which featured eight different players scoring.

Conner Penberth also tallied 16 points for the winners, now 3-1.

For the Rough Riders (1-2), Frankie Pujols netted a team-high 12 points.

Nativity-Tamaqua

Noah Mateyak poured in a game-high 32 points to power Tamaqua to an 80-67 non-league victory over Nativity.

Mateyak drained seven three-pointers during his performance to help the Blue Raiders improve to 2-2.

Tamaqua, which used a 21-12 third quarter to take control, also received 20 points from Connor Dillon and 12 from Michael Styka.

Mike Quirk paced the Hilltoppers (1-3) with 18 points.

Saucon Valley-Jim Thorpe

Saucon Valley gained a double-digit lead at halftime and held on for a 57-48 non-league victory over Jim Thorpe.

Jack Robertson scored 12 of his game-high 22 points over the first two quarters as the Panthers earned a 12-point advantage.

Saucon, now 2-1, also received 11 points from Adam Clark.

For the Olympians, who slipped to 0-4, Christian Barile registered a team-high 18 points while Aaron Curran added 11 and Ben Goldberg chipped in with 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ES North-Panther Valley

Maddison Maynard and Morgan Orsulak both had big games to lift Panther Valley to a 65-37 non-league victory over East Stroudsburg North.

Orsulak scored 23 of her 25 points in the first half as the Panthers raced to a 48-17 halftime lead. Maynard registered 18 of her game-high 26 points during the first two quarters as PV upped its record to 3-1.

Orsulak also added 12 rebounds and six steals, while Maynard added eight assists.

For the Timberwolves, now 0-4, Ayla Hashway and Amber Beckworth both scored 10 points.

Tamaqua-Salisbury

A 25-point performance by Lauren Ligenza helped Tamaqua roll to a 53-16 non-league victory over Salisbury.

Ligenza scored 16 of her points in the opening half as the Blue Raiders took a big lead. The winners closed out the contest by allowing just three second-half points.

Ligenza finished with a double-double as she also pulled down 13 rebounds. The winners, now 4-1, also received 13 points and eight boards from Lorelei Plasha.

The Falcons (1-2) received a team-high nine points from Kendra Morgan.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Panther Valley

at PA National Guard Invite

Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks continued her dominance at the Pennsylvania National Guard Invitational.

Banks scored two pins for wins, as the Panther grappler posted quick falls – as both were under 20-seconds – over Danielle Glaser and Caylin Weiss, both of Northampton, to capture the 235-pound title.

Rylyn Gensey-Strohl (136), Mayrin Vazquez-Frias (142) and Anelia Bennick (155) all posted fourth-place finishes for the Panthers.

BOYS WRESTLING

Lehighton, Panther Valley at Sam Lovello Classic

Seven wrestlers from Lehighton, along with two from Panther Valley came away with medals from Brandywine Heights’ Sam Lovello Classic.

The Indians’ Reese Balk (285) and the Panthers’ Rory Dixon (152) both earned runner-up finishes.

Aidan Gruber (114), Evan Wentz (139), Konner Nalesnik (152) and Jacob Ferguson (160) all placed third for the Tribe, while Carter Hontz (145) and Lukas Corzier (127), placed fourth and sixth, respectively.

Brian Welser earned a fifth-place finish at 285 pounds for Panther Valley.

The Indians finished fourth overall as a team, while the Panthers placed 12th.

Palmerton

at Case-Flynn Duals

Palmerton took part in the Case-Flynn Duals at Pottsville High and came away with a 3-3 mark on the day.

The Bombers scored wins over Scranton (41-30), Tunkhannock (48-24) and Wyoming Valley West (43-28), but suffered setbacks to Roman Catholic (39-33), Milton (57-18) and host Pottsville (42-28).

Three Bombers completed the day unbeaten, as Thomas Pasqueriello was a perfect 6-0 at 107-pounds, which included three pins, a decision and two forfeits.

Josh Merkel went 5-0 with five pins at 133, while Derek King was 4-0 with a pin, major decision, decision and a forfeit at 152.

Kellen Trotter posted a 4-1 mark at 121 pounds.

Tamaqua

at Darren Klingerman Invite

Tamaqua traveled to Bloomsburg to take part in the Darren Klingerman Invitational.

The Blue Raiders walked away with six medalists, and ended up in fourth place as a team behind overall tournament champion Warrior Run.

Brody Schlier (114) and Jacob Hehn (172) grabbed third-place honors in their respective weight classes, while Evan Temarantz (107) and Aiden Schlier (121) both ended up in fourth place.

Gabe Erbe (127) and Bradley Whalen (160) added fifth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua-Hazleton

Tamaqua opened its season with a non-league split with Hazleton Area.

The visiting Blue Raiders posted a 107-56 win on the girls’ side, while the Cougars recorded a 110-59 victory in the boys’ meet.

Isabella Jones (100, 200 freestyle) and Lexi Buchala (200IM, 500 freestyle) led the way for the Raiders with multiple first-place finishes in the girls meet, while Stephen Behun posted wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle events for the boys.
