Bears get first win
Pleasant Valley grabbed its first win of the season, posting a 59-49 victory over East Stroudsburg North in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play Wednesday night.
The Bears (1-3) rolled early on and led by as many as 19 points at one point in the game. The Timberwolves cut the PV lead to 10 late in the fourth quarter, but weren’t able to get any closer.
“We had to focus on running our offense, and playing fundamental basketball,” said Pleasant Valley head coach Corinne Morris. “We played as a team. We wanted to come out and have fun, and we did that.”
Senior Aryn Stivala put up 24 points for the Bears - 14 of which came in the first quarter.
“Honestly, I don’t even think it was my best effort,” Stivala said. “I don’t think it was the team’s best effort. I think we could’ve done a little better, but I’m happy we finally got a win, and I hope we can build on this momentum.”
Stivala was not only an important part of the Pleasant Valley offense, she also made some nice defensive plays against East Stroudsburg North.
“It hasn’t been a great start ... it’s been a little rough,” Stivala said about the Bears’ three straight losses to begin the season. “Hopefully, it just starts getting better and this win pushes us to keep winning.”
The Bears’ coach liked what she saw from her star players.
“She was just focused,” Morris said about Stivala. “We tweaked her shot and had some plays to get her open. She was just honed in tonight.”
The Bears scored 22 points in the first quarter, and held a comfortable 30-15 halftime lead. They then maintained the double-digit lead throughout the second half.
Brooke Greene also had a good night for the Bears, scoring 12 points. Seree Gaddist also helped out the PV cause by scoring some big buckets and getting to the free-throw line, finishing with nine points, while Ryan Rosenberg accounted for two of Pleasant Valley’s six three-pointers and had eight points.
Celis Miranda was the top scorer for East Stroudsburg North (0-3) with 17 points.
The four-game stretch in the first six days of the season has left the Bears with minimal practice time, but the team has been working on things to get better.
“We’ve only had two practices in between our stretch of games,” Morris said. “We’re just really focusing on working hard on defense, and running our offense.”
IMPROVING ... Stivala said the Bears are benefiting from being in Year 2 under coach Morris. “With any coaching change, things are always going to be a little bit different,” Stivala said. “Last year, I felt like we started from square one, rather than building from the previous the year. Now, in our second year under coach Morris, I think things are starting to come together.”
