On Christmas Eve, 2010, 12-year-old Hunter Wolfe of Jim Thorpe was hospitalized at St. Christopher’s Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia because of complications from leukemia. Several months later, he passed away at St. Christopher’s.
“While there, Hunter and other children battling cancer received holiday gifts through generous donations,” said Leila Hunter, a childhood friend of Hunter’s. “It meant a lot to Hunter to know that people cared about the children in the hospital.”
That Christmas, a toy drive in his memory for the children in the oncology department at St. Christopher’s Hospital was started by two students from Jim Thorpe and has been held every year since.
This year, the 13th annual toy drive is being coordinated again by Leila Hurley, who attends Kutztown University, by her brother Caiden Hurley and Olivia Wolfe, Hunter’s sister who attends West Chester University, and Jim Thorpe High School senior Leah Wasko.
Toys can be dropped off in the Jim Thorpe School District at L.B. Morris Elementary School, Penn Kidder Campus, and Jim Thorpe High School.
Additional drop offs or ship to addresses:
• Hurley residence, 528 Lehigh St., Jim Thorpe, PA 18229.
• Sargent residence, 1086 Broadview Dr., Jim Thorpe, PA 18229.
