A small group gathered Saturday at the Polk Township Veterans Memorial during a ceremony to honor veterans and those still serving in uniform.
“We planned a short, low-key ceremony to thank veterans for all that they do,” said Joan McKinsey, chairwoman of the Veterans Memorial Commission.
Pastor Deborah Scheffey, Salem St. Paul Lutheran Church, read a prayer from an Armed Forces Chaplain’s book used by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
George Moretz played TAPS.
“I was up and down the East Coast during my six years in the Navy,” he said. “I was never on a ship, but we flew airplanes looking for Russian submarines.”
After the ceremony, a dozen people had coffee and baked goods while sharing stories.
“This is the first time I came to this ceremony, and I think I will come more often. I liked this gathering,” said Paul Ziegenfus, a Polk Township resident who served in the Navy 1976 through 1980 in Norfolk, Virginia.
McKinsey said this was the third time they hosted a Veterans Day event.
During the first one, the committee collected names for the plaque, which now hangs at the Memorial on Trach Road, Kresgeville.
