Carbon opens bids for shelter

After rejecting bids for two contracts on a women’s homeless shelter project in September, Carbon County officials opened the next round of bids in hopes of getting quotes that would be acceptable for the project.

On Thursday, bids for general construction and electrical were opened for the Peaceful Knights women’s shelter in Lehighton.

Northeast Construction Management Group of Lehighton bid on both contracts, submitting a bid of $55,083 for the electrical contract, and $145,404 for the general contract.

Larry McCullion and Son Electrical Construction Services of Summit Hill also submitted a bid for electrical. The company bid $47,362.

The bids were then tabled until 10 a.m. Tuesday, when the commissioners will hold a special meeting to either award or reject the bids.

The reason for the special meeting is due to the 90-day deadline on the plumbing bid that was received by Dave’s Plumbing and Heating Inc. of Palmerton in August.

This is the fourth time that the project has gone to bid since August.

Carbon County has $163,000 in Community Development Block Grant COVID funds that is being used toward the project. The money was initially awarded to Family Promise of Carbon County, but delays in their plans caused the county to shift the funds to Peaceful Knights.

The deadline for the project, which was originally Sept. 29, was e pushed back by the state until next year to allow for time for the work to be completed.

The location of the new women’s shelter will be at 131-133 N. First St., Lehighton, a building Peaceful Knights purchased several years ago with the hopes of helping more people.
