Smith defeats Miller in Carbon coroner race

Incumbent Robert Miller, a Democrat, was defeated by Mark Smith, a Republican who will be Carbon County’s next coroner.

The results of the General Election showed voters chose Smith, who in the primary won the Republican nomination via a write-in campaign.

Smith garnered 7,708 votes while Miller received 6,575 votes.

Miller had served as coroner since 2016, when he won his first term after then coroner Bruce Nalesnik chose to not seek reelection.

Smith said Tuesday on his campaign page on Facebook that he just wanted to “make things better, more professional, and more compassion for the people of Carbon County.”

He said that there are a lot of things that can be improved in the coroner’s office and stressed the importance of the family of the deceased.

“We’re going to be very compassionate toward the family and the friends,” Smith said.

Smith is a U.S. Air Force veteran, a firefighter and a critical care paramedic.

The coroner’s office is a critical office that oversees all deaths within the county.

The position will be paid $32,321 in 2024.
