Carbon County will see a new county controller.
The voters selected Kayla Herman, a Republican, to replace outgoing Controller Mark Sverchek, who chose to not seek reelection. She defeated Democrat Sam Lux, 8,372 to 6,048 unofficial votes.
“I’m speechless,” she said Tuesday night, surrounded by family and friends at the Boat Yard in Weissport. “I’m so grateful for all of my supporters. The many missed family events was worth it. This win wouldn’t have been possible without the people of Carbon County who voted for me. Thank you.”
Herman said that she is looking forward to her new position, which she will officially begin in January, and wants to work well with her staff and the new board of commissioners to “keep moving Carbon County forward.”
Herman, of Jim Thorpe, has 15 years of experience in financial aspects and will now shadow Sverchek in preparation for taking over the office.
The county controller, subject to the management and administration of the county commissioners, supervises the fiscal affairs of the county. All bids on contracts exceeding $10,000 are received in the Controller’s office and opened at a public meeting.
The controller also supervises the daily operations of the fiscal/data processing department, is the liaison officer who works with the county’s external auditors, and supervises and administers the day to day operations of the county’s retirement plan.
Herman will be paid $68,350 in 2024 and $69,717 in 2025, salaries that have been set by the previous salary board for row officers.
