Council aims to stop smoking along trailhead

It won’t be long before smoking is prohibited along a popular destination point for outdoor enthusiasts in Lehighton.

That’s after borough council on a 6-0 vote Monday adopted an ordinance amending the smoking ordinance to include the trailhead. Councilman Darryl Arner was absent.

At September’s council meeting, it was noted that loitering by Lehighton’s trailhead pavilion has become a problem borough officials want addressed.

Kris Kunkle, Public Works supervisor, said at that time there’s been an issue with people “coming out of tent city,” spending the entire day there and deterring bicyclists from using the pavilion.

Councilman Ryan Saunders previously questioned how the borough would police usage of the public pavilion.

Councilman Autumn Abelovsky at that time asked what type of terminology would have to be used to differentiate.

Kunkle said that the Public Works Department has taken tables out of the area once before because of certain actions.

He added there were hundreds of cigarette butts and constant trash strewed all about.

Saunders suggested putting up a no smoking sign.

Saunders said at that time he’d like to see borough solicitor Jim Nanovic draft up an amendment.
