A Walnutport man is concerned about the safety of children during Halloween events in the borough.
Resident Donald Eckhart told borough council on Thursday that the recent Greater Northern Lehigh Halloween Parade held Oct. 28 was phenomenal.
However, Eckhart said he was on the corner of Lincoln Avenue when he became concerned after he came across several young children in the area.
But, at 6 p.m. people came streaming down from upper Main Street, and at Lincoln Avenue and Main Street, he came in contact with a fire policeman.
“He (the fire policeman) must be the bravest person; he’s getting broadsided while you have these hoards of little kids,” Eckhart said. “Cars are going way too fast at that time.”
All of that, Eckhart said, worries him.
“I wish anyone in this room would see this; you can’t believe how dangerous this is,” he said. “I’m really concerned.”
Eckhart suggested a meeting be held to get things worked out in advance of next year’s parade.
Borough Mayor Wayne Weidner said the borough was and is on top of things.
“I don’t let them past that point,” Weidner said. “After 6, nobody.”
Weidner noted that he had two fire police out there.
“I only have so much (help); we have to have them trained,” he said. “I can only put out what I can; we can’t just put anybody out on the streets.”
Borough roadmaster Mike Wentz said he believes the matter needs to be discussed with the Northern Lehigh Events Committee.
Council President Mike Gaston noted that it’s Pennsylvania Department of Transportation road.
Councilman David Stankovic questioned why the parents aren’t walking their kids.
Eckhart again reiterated that he would like to have some kind of meeting in October.
But, Weidner said the matter is already being discussed.
“We’re not waiting until then,” Weidner said. “We’re meeting already.”
