Work on L. Towamensing playground is finished
A playground in Lower Towamensing Township has a new look now that the final touches are completed.
The park has been refurbished over the past two years, and includes a new play area for children, benches, blacktop on the basketball courts, along with new backboards, rims and nets, and lighting.
Funding for the project came from the Lower Towamensing Township board of supervisors, Aquashicola Fire Dept., Krill Foundation, Palmerton Pacemakers Car Club and Befesa Community Development Fund.
Frable Electric also contributed materials, labor and bucket truck for installation of the lights.
Bill George, fire chief of Aquashicola Fire Department, said it would like to thank its members, local citizens, and the township for their help, labor and heavy equipment.
George, who also served as the project coordinator, also thanked the Palmerton High School football team, along with its coach, Chris Walkowiak, who put down the topsoil and sod.
“The coach and the kids really stepped up,” George said. “The football team is also very active in community events (and) they have again volunteered to help with the Christmas in the Park tree set up and removal.”
Rory Koons, president of the Aquashicola Fire Department, previously said the Lower Towamensing Township board of supervisors obtained a Department of Community and Economic Resources grant to revamp the playground.
Koons said that with the assistance of some local organizations, additional improvements were made.
He said the playground at 182 Pine St. was established by the Aquashicola Fire Company in the mid-1960s.
Koons said after the fire company purchased and excavated the property, the Krill Youth Foundation stepped up and assisted with equipment for the basketball court and the playground.
