Palmerton’s rules on truck parking questioned
A Palmerton man has asked borough officials to reconsider their stance on limiting truck parking.
Resident Joe Federanich revisited the matter with borough council on Thursday, one month after he debated the topic.
Federanich said that Councilman Andrew Hollywood previously questioned the availability of picnic tables with charging stations.
Borough police Chief Tim Kromer said the police department has only had one issue with damage to a bench.
Federanich said that in six months, they haven’t had a complaint, and added that a number of months ago, they had asked for a sign explaining who can be in the borough park, but that never materialized.
However, Federanich said he knows that signs went up quickly with regard to parking in borough parking lots.
Federanich said there was one individual who necessitated the problem because that person wasn’t parking their vehicle, but was storing it there.
“If you’re a taxpayer, you should be able to park it there,” Federanich said. “I think you’ve got a problem with one individual; I think you should revisit the topic.”
Last month, Joe and Marj Federanich expressed their frustration that truck drivers are no longer permitted to park their vehicles at the borough garage.
Joe Federanich asked council at that time if they were aware of the sign that’s been put up at the location on Third Street.
Federanich said that past practice was that truck drivers were allowed to park there, and now they won’t be able to.
Borough Manager Autumn Canfield said at that time she believes it’s “against borough regulations” and that it has something to do with the size, coupled with the fact that the borough is trying to deter its parking lot from turning into a tractor trailer parking lot.
She added she believes that if there’s room on a person’s property, they’re allowed to park on a property.
Kromer said at that time that all borough-owned lots are restricted.
He previously said there had been an issue with trailers being parked there and not moving.
Federanich told council he believes that if it has a problem with an individual, they should address it with that individual.
Canfield said the borough cannot say to one person they can’t park there and then allow someone else to.
Marj Federanich told council it was their son, and now he can’t park there.
