Driver flown from violent crash on I-80

A driver was flown from the scene of a violent crash at 12:06 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 80 eastbound in Hamilton Township.

State police at the Stroudsburg barracks said they were summoned to the area of mile marker 302.2. The driver, who police have yet to identify, lost control of the vehicle, traveled off the roadway into a gorge dividing I-80 eastbound from Exit 302A.

They said the vehicle struck three safety posts and a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation sign, went airborne for 141 feet and striking several trees before stopping.

Police said the driver was ejected from the vehicle and had major injuries to his facial area and spinal cord. He was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg in Bethlehem. Police said listed him as stable at 4:50 a.m. Sunday.

Police said I-80 eastbound was closed for 4 hours and 13 minutes until the vehicle was removed from the scene by a towing service.
