Covered bridge struck again

It appears drivers continue to have a problem determining their vehicle is too large for a historic covered bridge in Lower Towamensing Township.

On Thursday, Carbon County Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein announced that the county received yet another report of an oversized vehicle attempting to cross the bridge.

He noted that the motorist took down the height restriction bar, but never made it to the bridge, so there were minimal damages this time at the site.

“They didn’t hit the steel beam or the bridge,” Nothstein said, “but they did hit the height bar as you can see by the marks on the bar.”

He added that township crews already were working on rehanging the bar, which he said, should be charged to the county.

He thanked the crew for helping out the county.

“I appreciate their cooperation,” he said.

Nothstein said that troopers are investigating and hopes the person responsible will be identified.

The covered bridge, located on Little Gap Road, has been the site of multiple strikes, causing thousands in damage over the years.

Last year, a U-Haul truck attempted to drive through, but was also stopped by the height restriction bar, saving the bridge from significant damage; and a Penske box truck struck the barriers, causing over $8,000 in damage to the steel I-beam that the barriers hang from.

The covered bridge is over 163 years old and is the last remaining covered bridge in Carbon County that is used by vehicle traffic.
