Domestic violence organization starts monthly office hours

An organization that helps victims of domestic violence will hold office hours on the last Monday of each month at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 246 E. Broad St.

Sarah Barket, chief public affairs officer for the Schuylkill Hope Center, said representatives will be on hand Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.

“Public transportation in Schuylkill County is skeletal - especially if you are a victim and you are really isolated,” Barket said of bringing the services to the borough.

Schuylkill Hope Center, formerly known as Schuylkill Women in Crisis, helps all victims of domestic and sexual violence regardless of gender.

The center can help with emergency shelter for victims and their children, and can help find longer-term housing. It can assist with legal issues, counseling, programs for impacted children, and help with support or custody matters.

It also offers a hotline that’s available 24 hours each day.

“There is always someone there to answer a call,” Barket said of the 570-622-6220 support line that’s manned by professional staff and trained volunteers.

The Hope Center had hours previously in Tamaqua, but when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the service was put on hold.

“We encourage people to stop by if they want to learn more or if they want to help a friend,” Barket said.

In addition to Tamaqua, representatives from the center will visit state Sen. David Argall’s 1 W. Centre St., Mahanoy City office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Monday of each month.

Private appointments are available by calling 570-622-6220. All services are free and confidential. For more information, visit Schuylkill Hope Center for Victims of Domestic Violence on Facebook.
