A Tamaqua man is facing charges after he broke into a borough home just after 11 p.m. Oct. 15.
Tamaqua police said Joseph Nortavage Jr., 26, turned himself in shortly after and is free on $25,000 unsecured bail.
According to police, officers were dispatched to a home on the 300 block of Columbia Street for a break-in in progress. When officers arrived, they spoke to the resident who said she returned to find an unknown man inside her home. After a verbal confrontation, the man, later identified as Nortavage, fled from the property.
Police viewed footage from the resident’s surveillance system that showed Nortavage knocking on the front door and attempting to enter the home. Officers said he then went to the rear of the home where he broke the window on the door to gain entry.
While police were at the home, the Schuylkill County Communications Center notified them that Nortavage had called to turn himself in. He was taken into custody without incident. Police said he had cuts on his hand.
He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua, on charges of criminal trespass-break into a structure; criminal mischief, criminal trespass-simple trespass and public drunkenness.
