The rain didn’t stop a walk Saturday morning to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease.
Hill’s Angels annual Memory Walk moved inside the Heritage Hill Senior Community on the coldest day of the season so far.
“The fight for Alzheimer’s is important to us, because Heritage Hill offers memory care,” said Rachael Timm, Heritage Hill’s marketing director. “We have been doing the walk for many years.”
There were tricky trays, and food sales of hot dogs, halushki and chicken noodle soup to warm people up on the damp day. There was also a bake sale.
“All of the activities are to raise money,” Timm said. “Individual people can also fund raise, or make a donation. All of the money goes to the Alzheimer’s Association.”
Those in attendance could take a flower to put in the Promise Garden at Heritage Hill. A blue flower symbolizes someone who has the disease; a purple, someone who has lost someone to the disease; yellow, someone who is supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, and orange, someone who supports the cause.
Aside from caring for the 20 of Heritage Hill’s 90 residents who have the disease, members of the staff can identify personally with Alzheimer’s - like Lisa Perla, Heritage Hill’s executive director.
“I am caretaker for my mother,” Perla said. “I’ve seen the disease progress. One day, she was looking for her mother, It’s horrible to watch, especially when it’s somebody you love, somebody so strong become childlike. I didn’t expect this to happen.”
